Dockers Get Value with the Locals | Print |

It's that time of year where 17 year olds invade holiday destinations around Australia to try and drink enough grog to undo 12 years of schooling (16 years for South Fremantle supporters). But some kids put that sort of shenanigans aside in the hope that they'll get draft by an AFL club and will be able to spend every October drinking themselves silly on end of season footy trips.

After picking up Chris Tarrant and Dean Solomon in the trades, Fremantle didn't have much to spend at the draft table but Phil Smart didn't get his name from his father, Phillip was his great uncle and Smart cane from years of snaring red hot talent with late draft picks.

Twiddling their thumbs for most of the morning, Fremantle wasted no time snapping up local boy, Clayton Collard, with their first pick. Just over six foot and weighing in at 86kg after hitting the weights room this season, he comes from the long line of South Fremantle players who have been banished to the big forward pockets at Fremantle oval. With his pace and agility he's expected to put his name into the pool for the Fremantle midfield rotation and take the occasional hang over Pavlich on the half forward line.

Unfortunately he once declared himself a West Coast supporter - unfortunate for him because the current treatment for that down at the Dockers is a combination of electroshock therapy, and some new things that Lee Walker picked up on a recent trip to China.

Phil Smart knocked out a couple of Suduko puzzles while he waited around for Fremantle's next pick at 52. They didn't stray far from home again and went down to Peel Thunder to take Brock O'Brien.  Another hopeful boost to the Freo midfield he was tipped to go in the top 20. The club are keen to get Brock in the same room as Josh Carr to fast track his niggling training so he can put his physical approach to good use. He's 6 foot and weighs about 75kg. Like Collard, he's played for WA but missed most of 2006 with an injured calf.

With the South Fremantle crowd occupied, Fremantle used pick 77 to pounce on East Fremantle player Calib Mourish...having arrived from Geraldton to play one game for the Sharks colts in a Luke McPharlin style ruse. Described by some as the black Dermot Brereton, he's a 194cm ruck roving centre half forward. Quick, agile, skilled, big leap and by the time the fitness blokes are done with him, if he runs into you your next job will be in a health insurance commercial.
