Consistency Is Overrated | Print |

Never a side to rest on their laurels, in the club's 300th game in the AFL, Fremantle have done what no other football club has been able to do in over 100 years of the league's existence. They've lost 5 games in a row after leading at quarter time. For some, it might not be a record to be proud of, but when you've watched your side lead and three quarter time and then lose - 5 times in a row, it's the sort of thing you take some pride in - because you tend to go quite mad. In a long tough slog, where Port flooded Fremantle so much, whether or not to build the North Quay Canal almost became a moot point. A goaless second quarter, peppered with some outrageous umpiring decisions, saw Port take the lead but Fremantle fought back in the third and put their noses in front at the final change. But there wasn't much life left in them, succumbing to Port's run and some outrageous umpiring decisions to slip behind and lose the game by 28 points.

There was an eerie stillness in Subiaco as the loyal hoards of Fremantle supporters made their way towards the match. You half expected the pre-match entertainment to be a couple of tumbleweeds drifting across the ground, perhaps even a shopping bag caught in the wind.

There was no buzz of excitement, no rush to get into the stadium, just quiet. When you're team has been in front so often, and lost by so many narrow margins, going to the game is like arriving at the bus stop 2 hours early – lots of busses might come along in that 2 hours but there is no point getting your hopes up until that last minute.  ....more
