Betting Scandal.... Turn It Up! | Print |

Society seemingly is continuing down the overreacting path. I?ve tried to let the matter slide through to the keeper and I?ve bitten my tongue many times. All I?ve got out of it is about eight thousand ulcers and I?m still wound up on the issue.

I am well aware of the need to sell papers and, given the latest two one day cricket series, I understand that anything football news wise will be grabbed, exaggerated, sensationalized and printed.

AFL ?Betting Scandal!? Four players supposedly had a bet on the footy. Evidently not one of the player?s bets was on a game in which they were a part of. That should be enough right there to say there is nothing in this issue and put the matter to bed.

After just glancing at the papers you could forgive the four blokes for each thinking, ?Geez I hope the guy I ran over while I was high as a kite, pissed as a cricket, driving down the wrong side of the freeway, talking on the hand held mobile phone while trying to outrun the coppers, pulls through and doesn?t die.?

The four guys have nudged and slightly fractured a ruling. They didn?t beat some one to within an inch of his life at a party. They didn?t speed away in a Ute from the cops. They didn?t hand over forged prescriptions. They weren?t caught on police phone taps ordering Columbia?s finest. They placed a couple of bets on games they themselves had no opportunity to assist or hinder the outcomes of.

Ok so the AFL rules are in place and each player has initially agreed to abide by them but calling this a ?Betting Scandal? and putting their mugs on the front page of the paper as if they?re part of the Michael Schofield Prison Break clan is mountains out of mole hill stuff. Just talk to the players, fine them if need be and put up the sign saying 'move along people there?s nothing to see here.'

What about an owner of a horse? Is he or she allowed to bet in a race that the horse is not running in? What about dockerland?s Jimmy the Greek? Is he allowed to cover the two up ring in a round that he is or isn?t tossing the coins in?

The guys had legitimate innocent punts which should be their right as Australians. Actually it shouldn?t just be their right but their duty! This country was created on, run on and will grow on, gambling and banning some one from having a punt is deadset un-Australian!
