Another Bad Day In The Docks | Print |

After starting the year off with a ridiculous penalty being thrown at Michael Johnson and a fit up job on Jeff Farmer, it was like Christmas at the tribunal this week. They were jolly and generous and everyone was their mate - until Matthew Carr came along. Carr must have run over someone’s dog on the way into the tribunal because he copped the full brunt of their wrath.

It wouldn't have come as a surprise to those inside AFL House if they'd walked outside and heard the towns people shouting "Free Barabas. Free Barabas" after the actions of the match review panel.  Luke Hodge was reported twice for belting blokes around the ears, Lenny Hayes was done for whacking Lindsay Thomas in the head, David Hille gave Beau Mustonand a clout in the head, Kepler Bradley gave Grant Birchall. one to go on with and Cameron Wood punched Cain Ackland in the gut none of which the match review panel felt needed the attention of the tribunal. Matthew Carr, on the other hand, was out of control and needed to be dealt with. He’d made the mistake of playing his football with a little known outfit called the Fremantle Dockers.

Carr was unfortunate enough to have his bump slip slightly high and graze Nathan Bassett in the head - most people call it a high bump, offer the victim a free kick and move on with their lives - the AFL call it striking and throw the book at you.

Using the grainy footage, appearing to be shot on an Adelaide supporter's mobile phone, the panel deemed that Carr's bump was reckless, of medium impact and of high contact, drawing a total of 225 demerit points. That means if he keeps his mouth shut and does what they tell him he will miss a week and if he challenges their decision he could risk two weeks.

The latest in a series of baffling nights at the tribunal  brings the Crucifixion Toll to 3 for the year at Fremantle. Carr will join Jeff Farmer and Michael Johnson on the sidelines in Round 1 but can thank himself lucky he waited until the last week of the pre-season competition to front the match review panel or he might have been out for up to six months.
