Impressive 'debut' for the kid, and given his tremendous upside I understand the excitement he engenders in people. Having said that, I find the intense focus on him a little unsettling for reasons I may struggle to articulate.
Crozier and Sheridan were taken around the same position in the preceding draft. When people here discuss them they tend to do so in a pretty measured way; all would agree both have talent, and both could turn into very good regular players for us once they round out their games and learn to impose themselves on the contest more.
Every time someone posts about Simpson here it's either wondering 'where he's at', or lauding him as a 300 gamer. He's going to come up against some obstacles in his career that he will at times struggle to overcome: playing with injuries, battling poor form, coping with a tag, playing well interstate, and the inevitable column from some plonker like Leigh Matthews with vague insinuations that he's lazy.
It can't be long before the two posts merge, and we start reading sentences like "people on here have lauded Simpson as a 300 game player, but after last week's performance I can't help but wonder where he's at?"
Maybe it makes no difference to Josh whether people are pumping him up / tearing him down on a site like this, or talkback, or whatever. But part of me wishes we could just let Josh be Josh for a couple of years without imposing all our hopes, expectations and (possibly) prejudices on him before he has even strung a few games together.
Anyway, curmudgeonly rant over. He seemed to have great touch, didn't he?
