Oh the humanity. Collingwood’s season was brought to an end on a Friday afternoon in mid March in one of the most gruesome demolitions of a football club you are ever likely to see. An underdone Fremantle side looked set to grind out a handy four points in their season opener against the Magpies but things took an ugly turn after quarter time when they kicked 6 goals straight, each more thrilling than the last, and sent Collingwood supporters running from the stadium as though they’d just seen their own reflections. Nat Fyfe, barely able to walk a few hours earlier, had miraculously recovered to tear the Magpie midfield to shreds, whilst Barlow and Mundy run them ragged and the little blokes turned the forward line into a chaotic helter skelter. Collingwood did not know what had hit them. By half time the Dockers were up by 35 points, by three quarter time they led by over ten goals. When the final siren sounded a priest needed to be brought out to read Collingwood their last rites as the Dockers skipped home to a 70 point win.
