The week of excitement and pondering the all important questions of percentage and ladder positions was pretty much settled by the time the game got underway, so Fremantle had no option but to put on a display of clinical pants pulling down against the Demons, wrapping the game up pretty quickly and then trying not to get hurt for the rest of the night. They did the second part with mixed success, McPharlin pulling up somewhere between a bit sore in the leg and a certain starter for the Rio de Janeiro Paralympic High Hop depending on who you talk to. There was more bad news with Pavlich was unable to take an outright lead in the Coleman but he doesn’t play for individual awards and skippered his team to a 61 point win over Melbourne which will see the Dockers taking on Geelong at the MCG this Saturday night.

Spring was never waiting for us. It always ran one step ahead, like Stephen Hill in a striped pair of pants. This year was different, though.  Spring had been caught off guard. Like Matthew Carr in a striped pair of pants. Fremantle had nonchalantly wandered up to spring, stuck a hood over it’s head, pushed it into a van with blackout windows and were driving it off to a secondary location to do things to it. Terrible things.

But before they did those terrible things, there was still the issue of Melbourne and Round 23. Calculators had been melting down all over Fremantle during the week as the locals pretended to be working while they secretly ran the permutations of Fremantle's ladder position. Sixth, seventh and eighth were up for grabs as Fremantle fought it out with the Cats and the Kangaroos for a home final.

By Saturday afternoon, Geelong had taken sixth place off the table with a win over Sydney. A few hours later, the Kangaroos had declared their hand for 8th spot and Fremantle were pretty much locked in to 7th position....once again proving the pointlessness of knowing how to calculate percentage.

As with Carlton's capitulation a week prior, the early results had taken most of the sting out of the game, leaving Fremantle with one main goal - to get Pavlich the Coleman. ...Read More
