Fremantle enter the second leg of their fortnight of grudges this week. Last week it was one man with a fringe job who hated the Fremantle administration but this week it’s an entire club who have mixed feelings about the Fremantle coach...grudge matches aren’t what they used to be. Of more concern for Fremantle (whinging St Kilda supporters are merely background noise at Fremantle games nowadays) is that the game will be played at the Melbourne Ice Dome. Freo have lost their past half a dozen games at the Dome, with an overall win return of 23%.

Last time Fremantle came up against the Saints was in Round 20 last year, at the Dome. Fremantle were struggling but had claimed 8th spot on the ladder, with some hard work early in the season. St Kilda were 7th and on their way up. It was a Friday night in August and only the keenest of the Saints supporters showed up.

With Fremantle’s injury rate at a level that saw the World Health Organisation get involved, St Rosco smelled blood in the water and went on the all out attack.  A slowish start saw the Dockers under the pump at quarter time but a quick kick up the bum from the coach and they finally hit form, kicking 6 goals in the second quarter and taking the lead. From there, football took the spotlight as the two teams slugged it out for what was poised to be a classic game of footy. It didn't pan out in the final term though, Fremantle's lack of man power caught up with them and St Kilda strode out to a 41 point win.

A young Tendai Mzungu starred with the footy for Fremantle, picking up 30 touches while Clint Jones got rid of the ball 29 times for the Saints. Stephen Milne kicked 4 goals for St Kilda while Fremantle had to rely on a couple each from McPhee and Mayne.

Clinton Jones, Nick Dal Santo  and Tendai Mzungu picked up the 3-2-1 from the umpires and the Clinton Wolf Medal voting committee gave their votes to Mzungu, Zac Clarke and Nick Lower in controversial circumstances.

A year earlier Fremantle were going gangbusters when they took on the Saints at the Dome, in Round 4 2010. It was an epic match. The fight for top spot. The only thing that spoiled the match was the appalling behaviour of the St Kilda players. They spent the week sooking, they spent half the match crying to the umpires, they sashayed around the Dome like princesses but when the last quarter came, with Fremantle and the Saints locked in one of the tightest battles of the year, St Kilda produced more than the undermanned Dockers to steal the match. The loss brought an end to Fremantle's hopes of an undefeated season but saw St Kilda lose 3 of their next four matches, relying on wins against teams like West Coast and Richmond to keep them in the top half of the ladder.

Matthew Pavlich kicked a lazy 5 goals in that game, matched by Brendan Goddard and Stephen Milne for St Kilda with 5 each. Paul Duffield had 36 disposals for Fremantle and Nick Dal Santo 35 for the Saints. Pavlich picked up top points in the Clinton Wolf Medal, with David Mundy and Aaron Sandilands rounding out the placings. The umpires went for Nick Dal Santo, Aaron Sandilands and Brendon Goddard.

While many may point to travel issues in those two games, the local ones haven’t gone much better for Fremantle of late. When St Kilda visited Fremantle in Round 10 last year, Fremantle had just handed out a 10 goal drubbing to Port Adelaide and confidence was high going into the match. It was quite low after the match.

In what was nearly a 100 point turnaround from their thrashing of Port Adelaide, Fremantle went from roosters to superfluous piece of Mr T jewelry, failing to kick a goal in the first quarter and barley correcting that for much of the rest of the game losing 7.14 (56) to 15.12 (102).  Making matters worse, St Kilda were a rabble who were barely able to keep themselves upright, three players even struggled with that.

As always, Greg Broughton carried himself well, picking up 27 possessions, ahead of Tendai Mzungu with 24. For the Saints, Nick Dal Santo had plenty of it and Jack Steven was quite handy too. Broughton also top scored for Fremantle with 2 goals, the Saints got their goals from Adam Schneider who kicked 4 and a bloke by the name of Brett Peake who spent some time in East Fremantle in his youth. He kicked 3 goals. The Clinton Wolf Medal voting committee avoided controversy by awarding the votes to Greg Broughton, then they gave Grover and deBoer the minor votes...in controversial circumstances.

When you add them all up, St Kilda have beaten Fremantle in their last 7 matches, stretching back to 2007. Peter Bell and Chris Tarrant top scored in Fremantle’s last win over the Saints. Overall, Fremantle have won 11 of the 26 games between the two sides but just 2 away from home (one at Waverly and the other in Tasmania when the Saints tried and failed to steal the points).

This year the Saints are operating under a new coach, Coachy Smurf, but a soft draw so far has managed to disguise the problems that it has undoubtedly caused. In Round 1 they were belted by Port Adelaide but they’ve bounced back since then to beat the Gold Coast kids and the not long for this world Western Bulldogs. They are up two spots this week into 5th position.

Also on 2 wins and 1 loss, Fremantle haven’t had the luxury of a percentage boosting beanbag side to kick around so are in 9th spot. Last week they knocked off the Brisbane Lions at home, the week before they were unlucky to miss out on the points against the Swans.
