His intent is irrelevant. Its a mitigating factor when found guilty. Arent you a lawyer, Morgan?

Morgan, he more than "just" missed the footy. An elbow to the head is an elbow to the head. He was not using that elbow for protection. The photo posted by DM clearly shows the impact to Fredericks head not shoulder, and how much he missed the footy by. I know Craig O'donahue thinks it was Freddy's fault, but he was the only one going for the footy in that contest so should be protected by the rules.

Most AFL players know exactly what they’re doing and some have more of an appetite to go all Worsfold when imparting a ‘hit’. Those days are long gone, aren’t they?

Our two way game is dangerous enough without not clearly protecting the player openly seeking possession of the ball, whether at ground level or marking and I’m including the knee in the back of the head. You don’t have to do that. If we allow that we may as well have training include getting belted in the scone with a piece of 4x2 jarrah to condition players to the ‘game’. It may change the game, but so be it.

There has to be a reportable act Hypen. Spoiling is not a reportable act. Perhaps they'll bring it in, the same way they did for smothering this year (aka the Maynard rule), but until they do you can'r suspend a person for a spoil. It's why the MRP didn't even assess it.

5. Rough Conduct (Smothers)
Where a Player elects to leave the ground in an attempt to smother the football, any reasonably foreseeable high contact with an opponent that is at least Low Impact will be deemed to be Careless at a minimum, unless the Player has taken all reasonable steps to avoid that high contact and/ or minimise the force of that high contact (for example, by adopting a body position that minimises the force of the high contact).

Again, he didn't spoil the ball. That was his intent. His action was he jumped in the air and smashed someone senseless whilst missing the ball by a metre. The ball coincidentally followed the same path it would have had he spoiled successfully. It was the inertia of Fredericks body being violently assaulted that moved the ball.

Like Maynard the intent is defensible.

Now if we can get back to what actually happened.

Imagine if a Freo player did that to Nick Daicos on the MCG. You reckon the footy community would be quite so relaxed about it?

Gumnut, we also have a dual Brownlow medallist who has a bad habit of pushing players in the back after they have disposed of the ball.

Can anyone tell my why Webster needed to turn sideways and project his hip toward the player in front’s upper body and head region while attempting to make it look like his intent was only to punch the ball with his hands (I’ll emphasise - not actually looking at the ball at this point) and not make unnecessarily heavy contact to that player?

I think it was within three minutes after this, Jordan Clarke made a spoil on a saints player attempting to mark by jumping vertically, front on, and punching only the ball with barely any body contact. He could have easily Webstered him onto a stretcher but elected not to and we had no concussion.

It’s achievable.

Knowing what we know about injuries to the head now, can we realistically not discourage the Webster method comparative to the Clarke?

I think this needs to be looked at. If you are caught out of position on the turnover, leave the ground and concuss someone, isn’t that exactly what we have been led to believe you can’t do (the head is sacrosanct etc.). Yes, he attempted to spoil, but ended up jumping somewhat recklessly and Frederick had to be subbed out. Perhaps Webster needs to adjust how he attacks contests.

I think the difference with Maynard’s last year, he went up and executed the spoil, before coming down and having to brace for impact. The Webster one was all simultaneous, where it’s arguable wether he actually executed a “footy act”, and in his attempt, injured someone. Again, bigger club, I’d be interested to see the difference in narrative.

Having said that, I also thought Zerk-Thatcher should have been looked at when he cannoned into Amiss’ ribs late in the game against Port and that didn’t even get a mention, so who knows…

Coincedently, Jayvee, the incidents that were not investigated were all committed on Freo players.
