Fremantle Sign Up New Recruits
by Shane Richmond 22-11-2003

Dunn, Murphy, Mundy & Cambell. It sounds like Fremantle have signed up a Country and Western band but in fact it's the list of players the Dockers have taken in this years National Draft. The four young country Victorians will make their way west over the summer to join the Dockers for the next couple of years at least. East Fremantle's Brett Peake was also taken at pick 43 under the Father Son Rule.

Fremantle opened their account with Ryley Dunn (pictured above) at pick number 10. Dunn hails from the Murray Bushrangers where he spent the season as co-captain and his specs read 183.8 cm & 82.6kg. He's a versatile player and it seems the only position the bloke hasn't spent much time in is the bench. He's as good tough footballer who likes the physical stuff and will probably be the 'in and under' player Fremantle seem to need. He doesn't mind a bit of pain here and there, particularly if it's him dishing it out. He's a good strong mark for his height in the Paul Hasleby mold and has most of the skills of the game down pat. He has been named All-Australian for the past 2 years and should be AFL ready for the 2004 season.

While they waited for the Eagles to make up their minds which player's future they were going to ruin, Fremantle set their sites on Ryan Murphy who they snapped up with pick number 12. Murphy was tipped to go a bit later than 12 so Fremantle must have seen something special in him. At 192cm and 80kg, Murphy falls into the key position category. He does have exceptional endurance for his size though, so keep an eye out for him in the midfield if Chris Connolly & his bearded sidekick have anything to say about it. He's got a strong mark and has people raving about his kicking ability but being a big, fit man who's been criticised for his lack of physicality, don't expect too long a wait before the the name Bandy gets bandies about by Freo supporters. Has a great head of hair.

David Mundy (right of picture) had his name called out at pick 19. Mundy was given the tag of best defender in the draft and by all accounts he's a bloody good one too. He spent the year at fullback for the Murray Bushrangers playing just the sort of footy we Fremantle supporters like to see. As a big athletic bloke he played in front, read the play well and back himself to go for the footy then booted it back down the ground. He also plays a good team game, doing the little things that make defenders valuable. Measures 190cm and weighs in at 83kg.

The last pick (other than Brett Peake) by Fremantle came at 27 where they opted for Adam Cambell. The 192cm, 76kg Cambell is another big key position player, this time a forward. In fact he's an illustrious left footed full forward. He's got all the qualifications for the job - quick on the lead, has good pair of hands and an accurate kick, particularly when taking a set shot for goals. He's very agile and good skills but hasn't been playing the game all that long

Former Fremantle Rookie List member Ricky Mott was drafted by Carlton at pick 57.
